You Know Nothing, Jon Targaryon

June 21st, 2015

Spoiler alert: If you haven’t watched Season 5 yet, this post will reveal some of what happens in it. If you have seen it, read on…unless you don’t want to know what might happen next. What follows are not spoilers, since I have no specific knowledge of what’s going to happen next. These are merely predictions based on plot analysis. The may be right, or they may be wrong. Either way, I think they’re plausible, and I’d say likely, given the various hints that have been made.

Who really is Jon Snow?

Read what follows, and then you’ll know.

Here are my predictions about Jon Snow:

Jon Snow is (obviously) the son of Rhaegar Targaryon and Lyanna Stark, making him the Prince of Fire and Ice who was prophesied. Rhaegar did not kidnap or rape Lyanna: she loved him, and ran away with him of her own free will. Lyanna died in childbirth, with Ned at her side. This is what Ned was referring to when he told Jon “the next time we meet, I’ll tell you about your mother.”

Ned never told Robert for 3 reasons: (1) he didn’t want to put Jon’s life in danger (Robert and others would have seen Jon as a threat, removable only by Jon’s death), (2) he didn’t want to hurt Robert’s feelings by revealing that Lyanna had fallen in love with Rhaegar (this would have crushed Robert emotionally), and (3) he didn’t want to besmirch his sister’s honor.

Others on the internet have advanced this general theory, but what they haven’t predicted is when this will all be revealed, and what additional clues we’ll be given in the meantime.

Jon’s parentage will all be revealed sometime in the 6th or 7th season: probably the 6th (at least I hope so, so I don’t have to wait as long), and probably towards the end of the season (most likely the last or second-to-last episode, at the end of the episode). When will you know this prediction is true and how will you know when it’s about to be revealed? You’ll know that this is about to be revealed when the “previously” teaser at the beginning of the episode includes a flashback of Ned saying to Jon: “You may not have my name but you have my blood.” (Jon has Stark blood in him, via his mother.)

I predict we will receive another clue that Jon is the son of Rhaegar at the beginning of season 6 (in either the 1st or 2nd episode). The Watch is going to be getting ready to burn Jon’s body, and the Red Woman is going to bring him back to life (or, maybe she’ll send for Thoros, since she’s never done it and she knows he has). Jon’s body may even be set on fire, either while he’s coming back to life, or immediately before/after. However, the flames won’t harm him. Why not? Because as Daenyrus said, “fire can not harm a dragon.” Jon will ask the Red Woman why the flames didn’t harm him, and she will say “because the God of Light protected you from them.” Jon (and less-informed GoT viewers) won’t think about that clue much again until the season finale (or season 7) when it’s revealed that Jon is Rhaegar’s son. (BTW, there will also be a flashback to this scene at the beginning of the episode in which Jon’s parentage is revealed.)
