You Are Not Cool

October 15th, 2009

Inspired by the GOP’s attempts to look cool.

“There was underlying concerns we had become too regionalized and the party needed to reach beyond our comfort” zones, he said, citing defeats in such states as Virginia and North Carolina. “We need messengers to really capture that region – young, Hispanic, black, a cross section … We want to convey that the modern-day GOP looks like the conservative party that stands on principles. But we want to apply them to urban-surburban hip-hop settings.” – RNC Chair Michael Steele (quoted in Steele: GOP needs ‘hip-hop’ makeover, Washington Times 2/19/09)

You try so hard to be cool

But you end up looking like a fool.

I know you want to reach out to minorities,

But to do that you need to change your policies.

I know you want to represent

But that’s hard when you their interests don’t represent.

If inclusiveness is the message you want to be sending,

You’ve got to do more than just pretending.

And as image goes, stick with what you’ve got:

Don’t try to be something you’re not.

If any single video clip best illustrates the above point, it’s gotta be this one. (You have to watch the intro in order to get the reference to Karl Rove “biting the heads off critters.”)

Here’s Keith Olbermann reporting on Michele Bachmann at CPAC 2009 telling Michale Steele that he “be da man,” including some discussion about the GOP’s attempt to appeal to a more urban demograghic.

Here’s Rachel’s 2/29/09 introduction to then newly-elected RNC Chair Michael Steele’s attempt to give the GOP a hip-hop makeover and make the GOP look cool.

Here’s Jon Stewart’s 10/15/09 report on the GOP’s new website and Steele’s “What up” blog. After much mockery, the RNC quietly changed the name to “Change the Game” (read this Hill article for more about that).
