Work Ethic

September 3rd, 2012

In honor of Labor Day today.

“Labor Day is a chance to celebrate the strong American work ethic.” — Mitt Romney Labor Day press release

“You work three jobs? Uniquely American, isn’t it? I mean, that is fantastic that you’re doing that.” – George Bush response to a woman talking about how she had to work three jobs to get by, as if that’s the way it’s supposed to be

Workers of America, unite,

If you want more than you’ll get from the Right.

Why does Mitt Romney praise your work ethic today?

Because Repubs want to take everything else away.

They’re taking away your benefits and ability to collectively bargain,

And what you get in return is no bargain.

You get stagnant working and middle class wages,

And inequality which a third world future presages.

While Mitt and his fellow point-one-percenters are doing great,

People who work don’t have much reason to celebrate.

They get to work two or three jobs just to make ends meet,

While the super-rich on their taxes cheat.

The GOP makes war against teachers, firefighters, cops, and other public workers

Whom Republicans portray as money-grubbing shirkers.

The American work ethic has paid off big

For those with enough power and wealth, the system to rig.

The one percent’s wealth has continued to grow,

While the 99% has less and less for its labor to show.

How long will the work ethic last if work doesn’t pay,

And Repubs keep taking working Americans’ futures away?

Yeah, Republicans love the American work ethic because it benefits them,

But if you want policies that benefit the working and middle class, vote Dem!

Here’s Bush’s expression of love for the American work ethic. Think how much higher corporate profits are when employees have to work 2-3 jobs to survive.
