What’s Your Excuse? (or, The Tancredo Credo)

February 5th, 2010

Inspired by Tom Tancredo: Obama Elected Because ‘We Do Not Have A Civics, Literacy Test’ To Vote (Huffington Post 2/05/10).

So you think we should bring back the literacy test,

Used for many years in the South to keep blacks oppressed.

First of all, you’re incorrect in your evaluation:

Obama supporters have higher levels of education.

But even if what you said were true,

It says less about Obama voters than it does about you.

Your statement shows you don’t know much about American history

(How you got elected remains a mystery).

It shows you don’t have much respect for people you disagree with

And proves that the GOP’s big tent is just an empty myth.

I’ll tell you what I would be in favor of

(And which you’d have to try to get a waiver of):

A civics test before one could become a politician

Requiring a minimum level of knowledge and cognition.

A Congressional literacy test might also be something we need

Since so many Republicans seem to not know how to read.

The GOP is always complaining about having to read long bills,

So maybe you all have a problem with your reading skills.

So I wouldn’t bring up civics and literacy tests if I were you:

It might be something you’d end up having to do.

It’s stupid to make a claim that can be so easily debunked.

And besides, if there were a civics test, you’d have already flunked.
