What’s It All About, Alfie

March 22nd, 2010

Inspired by Health reform and the specter of Alf Landon (Dana Milbank, Washington Post 3/21/10) on the GOP’s attempt (lead by Republican Presidential nominee Alf Landon) to repeal Social Security. They lost the election in a landslide.

The GOP wants to repeal healthcare reform.

Their own past experience should their plans inform.

They tried the same thing with Social Security,

Led my a man who has now faded into obscurity.

GOP nominee for Pres. Alfie Landon

Ran on the platform, Social Security to abandon.

The voters disagreed, and Alfie lost in a landslide,

A lesson that the GOP in their own thinking should guide.

But Republicans, if you’re determined, history to repeat,

Then bring it on, and join Alfie Landon in ignominious defeat.

Here’s your theme music (and inspiration for the title) for today, Alfie, written and performed by Burt Bacharach from the movie Alfie. Appropriately, Alfie is about a very hypocritical guy (Alfie) whose many mistakes in life result in a series of reversals which finally force him to rethink his goals and approach.
