Walking the (Slut) Walk

August 21st, 2011

A follow-up to Sluts and Strippers, inspired by The right to be sexy can coexist with equality of the sexes (Robert McCartney,Washington Post8/21/11).

Sex appeal is always good

When one uses it for what one should.

In my view, there’s nothing anti-feminist about women using sex appeal to get what that sex appeal was designed for: sex, a relationship, etc. But it is anti-feminist for a woman to use sex appeal to advance in other areas, e.g., flirting with a boss in order to get a promotion. That denigrates women’s abilities to advance on their individual merits, and reinforces the “sleeping-your-way-to-the-top” stereotype. (Successful blacks suffer from a similar pernicious stereotype when it’s assumed that they have succeeded only because of affirmative action.)

This is not exclusively a female sex appeal issue: a good-looking young man who is promoted thanks to flirting with his female boss is equally wrong.

Note that this is a totally separate issue from the main one highlighted by the Slutwalk movement, which seek to discredit and shame the notion that a woman’s “slutty” attire makes it “OK” to sexually harass or rape her, because men can’t and/or shouldn’t have to control themselves when they see women dressed like that. That should not even be open for debate in a civilized society.
