Spoiler alert: If you haven’t seen Season 6 Episode 5 yet, this post will reveal some of what happens in it. If you have seen it, read on…unless you don’t want to know what might happen next.
First, a (minor) clarification: Bran is not actually traveling through time, his consciousness is. My theory explaining what happened is that when Bran warged into Hodor, he simultaneously warged into young Hodor (aka Willis), who just happened to be in Bran’s vision. When Bran did that, past and future Hodor’s consciousness were joined through the bridge that Bran had created, forcing Willis to experience his own future death. That (obviously) scarred him, and part of young Hodor’s consciousness actually died as a result.
What does this mean for Bran and friends? Well, that depends on exactly what the mechanism is for Bran’s newfound ability. If Bran needs to be physically with his warging target in both the present and in his vision, then his ability to use this power to influence events will be extremely limited. However, I don’t believe that to be the case. I believe that the Hodor consciousness bridge was just a freak accident, and what it illustrates is Bran’s power to warg into people (not all people, but some) in his visions, as well as in real life. My evidence: Bran’s vision of the castle battle with Young Ned, in which Ned “heard” Bran. Now, Ned didn’t really hear Bran in any physical sense: their consciousnesses connected.
This also doesn’t mean Bran can warg into anyone he wants and change the past. First, some people (assumedly) have strong enough wills to resist him (Ned certainly does, but he might have felt a kinship with Bran and not resisted). Second, as the Three Eyed Raven said, the past can’t be changed: from Bran’s perspective, what he did to Willis didn’t change the past, it allowed it to happen. But, what Bran might be able to do is use his ability to go back in time to plant ideas or knowledge in someone’s head that then allows (or convinces) that person to do something to save the day in the present.
Just speculation, but I’d be interested in people’s views of it.
