The Mothman Prophesy (or: Does Mitt Romney Have a Chance?)
April 21st, 2011
Inspired by conservative columnist Deroy Murdock’s prophesy about Mitt “The Mothman” Romney.
Does Moth Romney have a chance
In the Republican primary dance?
He might be the best candidate for the general election,
But GOP primary voters have (for him) an unfortunate predilection.
They tend to be extremely doctrinaire,
Which is bad if you’re the grandfather of Obamacare.
Primary voters are even more extreme than the rest of the GOP,
Which makes it hard to win independents if you make it past the primary.
So unless Romney can repeatedly metamorphize himself into something new,
His presidential career will be preemptively through.
Can Mitt set the base on fire?
If not, the prophesy is dire.
Poor Mitt—after all you’re hard work, it’s really a shame.
Then again, you know what happens with moths and flame.

Here’s Hardball’s 4/21/11 panel discussion. Conservative columnist Deroy Murdock from the National Review is the one that came up with the “moth” quip, along with a few other zingers. (Read His Name is Nobody for more about the GOP presidential enthusiasm leader.)

Our titular inspiration was of course The Mothman Prophesies. Here’s the movie trailer.
