The Fourth MSNBCer

September 27th, 2010

A follow-up to Shout, in which I introduced the Three MSNBCers.

“I have no life as it is…Keith, Rachel then Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert.  I can’t get involved in one more show…but I do love him. Hope it’s a success.” – Beaverhausen on Democratic Underground 9/27/10 10:05 p.m.

Beaverhausen, I know how you feel,

But watching straight thru to the Daily Show does have its appeal.

As my regular readers know, I’m a big fan of the Three MSNBCers

Whose passionate reporting many viewers endears.

Now a fourth MSNBCer is joining their ranks,

To which he frequent subbing for Keith owes his thanks.

Just as D’Artagnon helped out the Three Musketeers in a pinch,

Lawrence O’Donnell’s performance on Countdown made getting his own show a cinch.

Of all the Three Backups, I like him the best

(The network must agree, since they chose him rather than one of the rest).

I’m not saying that other MSNBC anchors are no good—

I’d probably watch them all if I could.

I occassionally do watch Dylan or Ed,

But I’m more interested in knowing what Chris, Keith, and Rachel said.

Alas, there are only so many hours in the day,

And only so many ways, the same news to say.

But while the Three MSNBCers mostly report the same events,

Each one is different in how he or she that news presents.

Each of them adds a different twist,

Which is why all three of them can peacefully coexist.

Will Lawrence be able to add something new,

Allowing him to stake out his own ground too?

Will he join the Three’s elite group,

Or will his later slot cause ratings to droop?

(Having Rachel as a lead-in won’t hurt,

As long as he a big enough chunk of her audience can convert).

I for one am willing to give him a shot

Because when he’s on Countdown I like him a lot.

(Don’t worry Keith, I’m still loyal to you,

But that doesn’t mean I don’t like Lawrence too.)

Four is better than three when the echo chamber has you outnumbered,

Especially since the right’s not by facts or fairness encumbered.

So good luck, D’Artagnon–I’m sure you’ll excel.

And may your rapier-like wit serve you well.

Here’s the scene from the classic movie in which the original Three Musketeers are joined by their fourth to fight off the Cardinal’s minions. Check out these remakes as well, both of which I enjoyed, and if you haven’t read the book, do so—it’s excellent.

Here’s Rachel’s 9/14/10 report on that night’s primary elections, featuring all Four MSNBCers. A harbinger of things to come?
