Telephone (or, Gaga for Gaga)

September 21st, 2010

Inspired by Lady Gaga to Rally For ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ Repeal (RollingStone.com 9/20/10) and Senate to vote on ‘don’t ask’ repeal (Washington Post 9/21/10). Lady Gaga headlined a rally in Maine yesterday. The Senate vote is scheduled for today at 2:15 p.m., so pick up the telephone and call your Senators at 202/224-3121 to express your support for repealing DADT.

Government control of romance is bad

Shouldn’t that be something that makes you freedom loving Republicans mad?

If you’ve got a Republican Senator, he or she may not want you to call,

But those calls are the most important ones to make of all.

They’d prefer to just dance around the issue,

Gays in the military are not monsters, you see:

They just want to serve their country.

Republicans seem to be in the dark about the current popular trend

In which most of the country agrees that DADT should end.

I guess there’s nothing else I can say,

Except that love is not a game with which politicians should play

If you’re one of the many who discrimination can’t condone,

Then all you need to do is pick up the phone.

Republicans don’t even need, DADT’s repeal to embrace,

Just to allow the vote to take place.

Instead, they’re prepared, in time of war,

To defund our troops to keep out people they abhor.

So if you’re from Tennessee, be sure to call Senator Alexander

And encourage him to let people speak with a little more candor.

Call Senators Snowe and Collins if you’re from Maine

And tell them to at least abstain.

Make them reject the political bluster

Being used to justify a GOP filibuster.

If you’re from Ohio, call Senator Voinovich

And try to get him, his position to “repeal” to switch.

And if you’re from Arizona, be sure to call Senator McCain

And tell him to stop his anti-repeal campaign.

(McCain previously said he’d support repeal if the generals did too,

But now that they have, he’s changed his view.)

But when it comes to ending Don’t Ask Don’t Tell,

Some Dems are opposed or on the fence as well.

So call Senator Webb if you’re a Virginian

To express your strong pro-repeal opinion.

And by the way, Lady Gaga, I loved your phone video.

(If you hadn’t seen it, reader, watch it below.)

Thank you, Milady, for speaking for those who dare not speak out;

While they’re forced to be silent, you can (and do) shout.

You use your fame to oppose discrimination

That seeks to deny gays the opportunity to serve our Nation.

You put some teeth in the case against DADT

In the battle to protect individual liberty.

Now, dear reader, add your voice to that appeal:

Pick up the telephone, and demand DADT’s repeal.

(And also join the anti-DADT coaltion

By signing this Change.org petition.)
