No Sympathy for the Devil

Friday, September 14th, 2012

A follow-up to Sympathy for the Devil, inspired by Bill Bennett’s speech today at the Value Voters Summit.

“The reaction of our leadership was not anger, not fury, not the terrible swift sword…but to sympathize with those who waged the attacks: Mitt Romney.” – Bill Bennett today at the Value Voters Summit, quoting and referring to his current hero

Two things Bill Bennet said were actual facts:

It was indeed Mitt Romney who “waged the attacks.”

And second, that those attacks were a disgrace

That serve our great Nation only to debase.

I sympathize with you Mitt, really I do:

I understand what you’re going through.

You’re seeing your dream of being Pres slip through your fingers

While trying to deal with the massive mistrust from your base that still lingers.

But though I understand the reason for how adeptly you pandered,

I can’t justify it according to any human ethical standard.

There’s a name for those who serve only themselves, whatever the cost.

What you gain will not match what our country—and your soul—have lost.

Trying to score political points from death and upheaval

Seems less in service to God and Country, than to the Purveyor of Evil.

But I for one refuse to sink to that level:

I won’t serve, or have sympathy for…the Devil.

Here’s Bennett’s full speech at the Values Voter Summit (the quote is at the 8”30 mark). Funny how Bennet quoted Macbeth, since I just did a few days ago too…

Here’s your theme music, Sympathy for the Devil by the Rolling Stones (from a 1969 live concert.
