A follow-up to Disgrace for the Cure, inspired by the Komen Foundation’s reversal on Planned Parenthood breast exam funding.
“The decision by the Susan G. Komen Foundation to reverse their decision about Planned Parenthood just goes to show you when women speak out, women win, and women’s health has a big victory this morning.” – Nancy Pelosi
“We want to apologize to the American public for recent decisions that cast doubt upon our commitment to our mission of saving women’s lives…Our original desire was to fulfill our fiduciary duty to our donors by not funding grant applications made by organizations under investigation. We will amend the criteria to make clear that disqualifying investigations must be criminal and conclusive in nature and not political. That is what is right and fair.” — Komen press release
Republicans always enjoy their moralistic preaching,
But there’s sometimes a backlash to their overreaching.
Komen’s retreat this morning is a victory for women’s voices
Raised against those who’d do anything to take away women’s choices.
It’s wasn’t about a woman’s freedom to choose to have an abortion,
Which is increasingly subject to anti-choice distortion.
It was about a woman’s—and society’s—choice of life—
Rather than seeking out or manufacturing societal strife.
Anti-choicers will willing to sacrifice 170,000 women’s lives
(That’s how many the cut-off of breast exams deprives).
They were more than willing to do that for the Greater Good
Of trying to destroy Planned Parenthood.
For years, Komen successfully focused on areas of agreeing
And worked on a non-partisan basis to promote women’s well-being.
Then Komen gave in to those willing to sacrifice women’s health,
And are more than willing to do that by duplicitous stealth.
So today’s a victory against those who would bring death in their supposed support of life,
Apparently not a big deal if it’s not your own daughter, sister, friend, or wife.
It was also nice Komen included a good old-fashioned apology,
Something usually so inimical to right-wing ideology.
We even got a nice dig from Komen at the House GOP,
Which seems like a double win for me.
Maybe now extreme anti-choicers will learn their lesson
And stop trying support for women’s health to lessen.

Here’s Alex Wagner’s report and panel discussion. Ben White–Your argument is irrelevant, because Komen never said they were killing the grant to punish Planned Parenthood as you suggest they have the right to (they do, though the backlash shows what would happen to them if they exercise that right). Komen said that it was because of the investigation, an investigation that is politically motivated and has found no wrongdoing. THAT’s where the McCarthyism comes in.

Here’s Andrea Mitchell’s report and discussion. (She has been a strong Komen supporter in the past and was personally torn apart by Komen’s original decision, which you can see in her 2/02/12 report.)
