Inspired by What an Originalist United States Might Look Like (Jeffrey Rosen, New York Times 1/08/11).
“Originalists” claim they make decisions based on original intent
By trying to divine what the Founders meant.
Nevermind that it somehow conveniently always ensues
That the Founders support “originalist” justices’ personal views,
Even though the Founders themselves dind’t agree,
And didn’t always spout “conservative” ideology.
Part of the problem, if one’s really sincere,
Is that the Founders’ views are often unclear.
That makes it easy to use the text
As a convenient pretext.
So while these originalists to be impartial judges profess,
They’re just politicians in ceremonial dress.
