Illegal Alienation (or, Duck the Police)

Our immigration series continues, inspired by Arizona Immigration Bill Divides Law Enforcement (New York Times 4/21/10), Act of vengeance: An unjust law won’t solve a real problem (Eugene Robinson, Washington Post 4/27/10) and Ariz. Measure puts police in tight spot (Washington Post 4/30/10).

“We are in a tenuous position as law enforcement. No matter which way we go, there are lawsuits in the wings. The ones who are going to get beaten up on this most are the law enforcement agencies.” – Tucson Police Chief Roberto Villasenor
 
“Hey, there are some Mexicans standing on the corner. You need to check them out.” – Villasenor repeating a typical complaint from the flood of phone calls that flooded his office on the day after the bill was passed
 
“We don’t have enough officers on the street to look for other stuff like that… Why would I do that?” – 30 year Tucson PD veteran Sgt. Russ Charlton, who added that he is worried that people who need assistance or could help solve a crime will hesitate to call police because of the law.
 
“One of the concrete problems with the law treating undocumented immigrants as criminals is that it gives those without papers a powerful incentive to stay as far away from police as possible. This will only make it more difficult for local police to investigate crimes and track down fugitive offenders, because no potential witness who is undocumented will come forward.” – Eugene Robinson, Washington Post


One of the problems with Arizona’s new profiling law

Is that it may not reduce crime at all.


In fact, it may have the opposite effect

Because of the way it police cooperation will affect.


That’s one of the reasons the AZ police chiefs association is opposed

To the measures the law imposed.


On top of this is diversion of resources and threat of lawsuits

(And this law will bring out some real beauts).


Gov. Brewer says we should “trust law enforcement” authorities.

It’s too bad she herself had other priorities.
