Gay Veterans Day
Tuesday, May 11th, 2010
In honor of the many gay men and women who serve our country, a follow-up to our earlier pieces Lieutenant Dan, The Return of Lieutenant Dan, Gay Heroes, Superqueeros, and our other posts about Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.
In spite of the fact that U.S. Don’t Ask Don’t Tell still enforces,
Many gay men and women serve in the U.S. Armed Forces.
If someone is willing to fight and die
Why must they still about themselves lie?
How can those who assume that holy charge
Be faced with the threat of dishonorable discharge?
How can we dismiss without emotion
Those who give the last full measure of devotion?
HRC has declared this Gay Veterans Day
To seek honor for our troops who just happen to be gay.
(Or more accurately, they’ve declared it “National Veterans Lobby Day on DADT”
To ensure gay soldiers are allowed to continue to serve their country.)
They’re already making their contribution.
