Gay Heroes

As a follow-up to our posts about Lincoln possibly being gay and Lieutenant Dan Choi (who has won his campaign for reinstatement after dismissal under Don’t Ask Don’t Tell), this post is inspired by the many other gay heroes out there, ambiguous or not.

     Ace and Gary were the first DADT pair

To prove that assuming gays can’t be heroes isn’t fair.

     Nobody asked them straight out if they were gay,

And they themselves never did say.

Their lack of super-hero conformance

Never interfered with their job performance.

     I don’t mean to say that gay equal rights isn’t serious,

Or that “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” has become deleterious.

Both of those things are true.

But I still think the cartoon is funny. Don’t you?

     It’s funny because it pokes fun of the latently suggestive cartoons of old,

And of the stereotypes many still hold.

It’s funny because it turns on their head

Things that many people used to look upon with dread.

     No, gays shouldn’t be made fun of

(Unless maybe you’re one of),

But sometimes laughter

Leads to acceptance thereafter.

And anything that makes Religious Rightists so mad

Can’t be all that bad.

     “The Ambiguously Gay Duo” first aired in 1996,

Introducing the famous duo which the title depicts.

That’s not long after DADT was created

Which the idea of gays serving openly negated.

     Since then, attitudes towards gays have changed a lot,

And gays a few more freedoms have got.

Soon, DADT itself will be repealed

And many new gay heroes will be revealed.

     Maybe even Ace and Gary will come out and say

They’re among all those heroes who happen to be gay.
