The Pile of Cash

Sunday, October 12th, 2014

Inspired by Rick Weiland, his guitar, and Dark Money Hits $100 Million With Help from Single-Candidate Groups (OpenSecrets.org 10/09/14). Future-Senator Weiland, I’ve got a few more songs for you. For everyone else: Leave a comment if you like my proposed songs, and sign up here to volunteer to make calls for Rick.

“And now, I’d like to do my own version of another song by the great Johnny Cash, about the influence of cash.” – What Rick Weiland should say when he sings my song

I have to say, I love this guy.

(Watch the videos and you’ll see why.)

Rick: here are some more songs about campaign cash,

In the style of your favorite singer, Johnny Cash.

If they help South Dakota elect a Dem,

I’m more than happy to have you use them.

***

Here’s Rick’s campaign song.

Here’s another one of his songs, a take on Johnny Cash’s I’ve Been Everywhere.

Here’s the original of that one: it’s a great song.

Here’s “Bring on the Road,” a take-off on King of the Road by Roger Miller.

Here’s Weiland talking about Obamacare’s benefits, and criticizes it for not having gone far enough. It’s good to see a Dem doing that. He’s also in favor of public option in the form of Medicare buy-in. This is a brilliant piece of rhetorical and political jujitsu. Since many of his listeners don’t like Obamacare (probably without really knowing why, and/or because they’ve been lied to about it), this approach let’s them say to themselves: “I knew I didn’t like Obamacare, and the reason is because there’s no Medicare buy-in option.”

Here’s one of Rick’s impromptu speeches. This guy really knows what he’s talking about.

Here’s Rick talking about income inequality and the role of money in politics. I love what this guy is saying. He’s harnessing the populist anger like Dems should have in 2010.

Now, how about a few more lyrics of my own creation for the campaign? Here’s Johnny Cash’s Ring of Fire, followed by my alternative lyrics, Pile of Cash. Introduce it like this: “And now, I’d like to do my own version of another song by the great Johnny Cash, about the influence of cash.”

“Ring Of Fire” “Pile of Cash”
Love is a burning thing Money in politics is a dangerous thing
And it makes a fiery ring. And it leaves a dirty ring.
Bound by wild desire It’ll burn our democracy to ash
I fell into a ring of fire. If we don’t get rid of that pile of cash.
I fell into a burning ring of fire, Don’t get bought by million dollar donors
I went down, down, down as the flames went higher You not they should be Congress’s owners.
And it burns, burns, burns, And it burns, burns, burns,
The ring of fire, the ring of fire. The pile of cash, the pile of cash.
The taste of love is sweet They need cash to get elected,
When hearts like ours meet. But what is for that cash expected?
I fell for you like a child, Do rich folks give and get nothing in return?
Oh, but the fire went wild. Or do they a handsome payback earn?
I fell into a burning ring of fire, Don’t get bought by million dollar donors
I went down, down, down as the flames went higher You not they should be Congress’s owners.
And it burns, burns, burns, And it burns, burns, burns,
The ring of fire, the ring of fire. The pile of cash, the pile of cash.
And it burns, burns, burns, And it burns, burns, burns,
The ring of fire, the ring of fire, The pile of cash, the pile of cash,
The ring of fire, the ring of fire. The pile of cash, the pile of cash.

Here’s Johnny Cash’s I Walk the Line, followed by my own version, I Walk the State. Introduce this by saying: “Y’all know I’ve been spending a lot of time driving and walking around our great state. Well, here’s a song about that, and why I’m doing it.”

“I Walk The Line” “I Walk The State”
I keep a close watch on this heart of mine I’ll keep a close watch on this state of ours
I keep my eyes wide open all the time I’ll protect people from abusive powers.
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds I’ll work hard regardless of the hours.
Because you’re mine, I walk the line Because it’s great, I walk the state
I find it very, very easy to be true I find it very, very easy to be true
I find myself alone when each day is through Because I just want what is best for you.
Yes, I’ll admit that I’m a fool for you I’m for the people, Red or Blue.
Because you’re mine, I walk the line Because it’s great, I walk the state
As sure as night is dark and day is light As sure as night is dark and day is light
I keep you on my mind both day and night I keep you on my mind both day and night
And happiness I’ve known proves that it’s right Politics should be about what’s right
Because you’re mine, I walk the line Because it’s great, I walk the state
You’ve got a way to keep me on your side You know that I’m on your side
You give me cause for love that I can’t hide Because I don’t rich donors hide
For you I know I’d even try to turn the tide We’ve got to take our country back and turn the tide
Because you’re mine, I walk the line Because it’s great, I walk the state
I keep a close watch on this heart of mine I’ll keep a close watch on this state of ours
I keep my eyes wide open all the time I’ll protect its people from abusive powers.
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds I’ll work hard regardless of the hours.
Because you’re mine, I walk the line Because it’s great, I walk the state

Here’s Johnny Cash’s The Man Comes Around, along with my suggested new lyrics for the Weiden version, The Rich Donor Comes Around.

“The Man Comes Around” “The Rich Donor Comes Around”
And I heard, as it were, the noise of thunder: And I heard, as it were, the noise of temptation:
One of the four beasts saying: “Come and see.” And I saw. One of the four beasts saying: “Come and take some.” But I didn’t take it.
And behold, a white horse. And behold, a white bus.
There’s a man goin’ ’round takin’ names. There’s a rich man goin’ ’round takin’ names.
An’ he decides who to free and who to blame. An’ he decides who to elect and who to blame.
Everybody won’t be treated all the same. Everybody won’t be treated all the same.
There’ll be a golden ladder reaching down. There’ll be a golden ladder to the Senate reaching down.
When the man comes around. When the man comes around.
The hairs on your arm will stand up. Take his money now, and later you’ll pay up
At the terror in each sip and in each sup. If you drink now from his cup.
For you partake of that last offered cup, If you don’t at his donor’s dinner sup.
Or disappear into the potter’s ground. He’ll make you disappear into the potter’s ground.
When the man comes around. When the man comes around.
Hear the trumpets, hear the pipers. Hear the trumpets, hear the pipers.
One hundred million angels singin’. One hundred million dollars singin’.
Multitudes are marching to the big kettle drum. Many politicians march to his big kettle drum.
Voices callin’, voices cryin’. But your voices callin’, voices cryin’.
Some are born an’ some are dyin’. Workin’ hard and really tryin’.
It’s Alpha’s and Omega’s Kingdom come. That time to take our country back has come.
And the whirlwind is in the thorn tree. And the whirlwind on the TV
The virgins are all trimming their wicks. If you don’t take money, you’ll take their licks.
The whirlwind is in the thorn tree. The whirlwind is on the TV
It’s hard for thee to kick against the pricks. It’s hard for thee to run against rich pricks.
Till Armageddon, no Shalam, no Shalom. If you’re elected with their contributions
Then the father hen will call his chickens home. They’ll expect you to solve problems with their solutions.
The wise men will bow down before the throne. The rich men will make you bow down before their throne.
And at his feet they’ll cast their golden crown. And will henceforth that Senator own
When the man comes around. When the man comes around.
Whoever is unjust, let him be unjust still. Whoever is rich, they’ll let him be rich still.
Whoever is righteous, let him be righteous still. Whoever is poor, they’ll let him be poor still.
Whoever is filthy, let him be filthy still. Whoever is sick, they’ll let him be sick still.
Listen to the words long written down, When the man comes around. Ignore to the words long written down, When the man comes around.
Hear the trumpets, hear the pipers. Hear the trumpets, hear the pipers.
One hundred million angels singin’. One hundred million dollars singin’.
Multitudes are marchin’ to the big kettle drum.
In measured hundredweight and penny pound. In measured hundredweight and penny pound.
When the man comes around. When the man comes around.
And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts, And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts,
And I looked and behold: a pale horse. And I looked and behold: a white bus
And his name, that sat on him, was Death. And his name, that sat on it, was Rounds.
And Hell followed with him. And Big Money followed with him.

Here’s Johnny Cash’s God’s Gonna Cut You Down, followed by my suggested new lyrics We’re Gonna Take It Back.

“God’s Gonna Cut You Down” “We’re Gonna Take It Back”
You can run on for a long time You can run the country for a long time
Run on for a long time Run it for a long time
Run on for a long time Run it for a long time
Sooner or later God’ll cut you down Sooner or later we’ll take it back
Sooner or later God’ll cut you down Sooner or later we’ll take it back
Go tell that long tongue liar Go tell that long tongue liar
Go and tell that midnight rider Go and tell that influence buyer
Tell the rambler, the gambler, the back biter Tell the vulture, the outsourcer, the back biter
Tell ’em that God’s gonna cut ’em down Tell ’em that we’re gonna take it back
Tell ’em that God’s gonna cut ’em down Tell ’em that we’re gonna take it back
Well my goodness gracious let me tell you the news Well my goodness gracious let me tell you the news
My head’s been wet with the midnight dew It should be the voters that get to choose,
I’ve been down on bended knee talkin’ to the man from Galilee Not the rich donors who decide who’ll lose.
He spoke to me in the voice so sweet The voters spoke to me in big and small towns
I thought I heard the shuffle of the angel’s feet About the Big Money that their voice drowns.
He called my name and my heart stood still They called my name and my heart stood still
When he said, “John go do My will!” When he said, “Rick go do our will!”
Go tell that long tongue liar Go tell that long tongue liar
Go and tell that midnight rider Go and tell that influence buyer
Tell the rambler, the gambler, the back biter Tell the vulture, the outsourcer, the back biter
Tell ’em that God’s gonna cut ’em down Tell ’em that we’re gonna take it back
Tell ’em that God’s gonna cut ’em down Tell ’em that we’re gonna take it back
You can run on for a long time You can run the country for a long time
Run on for a long time Run it for a long time
Run on for a long time Run it for a long time
Sooner or later God’ll cut you down Sooner or later we’ll take it back
Sooner or later God’ll cut you down Sooner or later we’ll take it back
Well you may throw your rock and hide your hand Well you may throw your rocks and make your attack
Workin’ in the dark against your fellow man Hiding behind a super PAC,
But as sure as God made black and white But as sure as God made black and white
What’s done in the dark will be brought to the light What’s done in the dark will be brought to the light.
Tell ’em that God’s gonna cut you down Tell ’em that we’re gonna take it back
Tell ’em that God’s gonna cut you down Tell ’em that we’re gonna take it back
Tell ’em that God’s gonna cut you down Tell ’em that we’re gonna take it back

Here’s a lighter one: Obamacare, sung to the tune of Jimmy Crack Corn (shown below as performed by Burl Ives), followed by my own version. (I never noticed before how racist the original is—just like GOP opposition to the ACA.)

Obamacare
They sabotaged
Obamacare.
They sabotaged
Obamacare.
They sabotaged
But it’s working anyway.
They keep repealing
Obamacare.
They keep repealing
Obamacare.
They keep repealing
Obamacare,
But it won’t go away.
They keep attacking
Obamacare.
They keep attacking
Obamacare.
They keep attacking
Obamacare,
To distract your attention away.
They’ll be for
Obamacare.
They’ll be for
Obamacare.
They’ll be for
Obamacare,
When you say “don’t take it away.”
