Try to Remember

Thursday, May 10th, 2012

A follow-up to Bully, inspired by Mitt Romney’s prep school classmates recall pranks, but also troubling incidents  (Jason Horowitz, Washington Post 5/10/12).

“He can’t look like that. That’s wrong. Just look at him!” – high school senior Mitt Romney to his friend Matthew Friedemann (who later regretted not stopping the subsequent attack), upset that presumed gay student John Lauber’s bleached-blond hair draped over one eye

“Government Romney doesn’t remember that incident at all. It’s understandable. It was in high school…It’s a story about pranks in high school and that kind of thing.” – Romney campaign senior advisor Ed Gillespie this morning on the Daily Rundown, dismissing the bullying incident as a  “prank” that Romney doesn’t even remember

“Try to remember the kind of September
When life was slow and oh, so mellow.
Try to remember the kind of September
When grass was green and grain was yellow.
Try to remember the kind of September
When you were a tender and callow fellow,
Try to remember and if you remember then follow.

“Just remember, it’s not a lie if you believe it.” – George Costanza

Mitt says he doesn’t remember his high school days,

Especially the time he and his friends spent bullying gays.

Mitt often talks about the past – he remembers it all,

But it’s strange that this time he doesn’t recall.

Sorry, Mitt, but I just don’t buy it.

I think you remember, and just prefer to deny it.

High school is one of the most emotionally intense periods a person goes through.

I remember my high school clearly, and I bet you do too.

And this incident isn’t the kind of thing one can forget.

It’s the kind of thing you remember, with regret.

Then again, Mitt has always shown amazing ability

Of belief-changing prowess and mental mutability.

Mitt, if you want to remember, how about trying.

(Either that or admit you’re just shamelessly lying.)

Here’s your theme song, Try to Remember from the musical The Fantasticks. Note that the lyrics (reproduced below in full) are eerily similar to the school song from Mitt’s old prep school. (Mitt Romney was unquestionably callow, plus there’s the weeping.)

Here’s Ed Gillespie 5/10/12 on the Daily Rundown discussing Romney’s position on same-sex marriage and the bullying incidents. What’s next? Is Mitt going to claim that he wasn’t the one that bullied that gay kid, it was Obama? (He also makes a bunch of other false statements, but I’ll leave their correction to others.)

Here’s the Costanza line (from season 6, episode 16).

Try to Remember lyrics

Try to remember the kind of September when life was slow and oh, so mellow.
Try to remember the kind of September when grass was green and grain was yellow.
Try to remember the kind of September when you were a tender and callow fellow,
Try to remember and if you remember then follow.
(Follow follow follow follow follow follow follow follow follow.)

Try to remember when life was so tender that no one wept except the willow.
Try to remember when life was so tender that dreams were kept beside your pillow.
Try to remember when life was so tender that love was an ember about to billow.
Try to remember and if you remember then follow.
(Follow follow follow follow follow follow follow follow follow.)

Deep in December it’s nice to remember although you know the snow will follow.
Deep in December it’s nice to remember without the hurt the heart is hollow.
Deep in December it’s nice to remember the fire of September that made us mellow.
Deep in December our hearts should remember and follow
(Follow follow follow follow follow follow follow follow follow.)
