Party of No Compromise (…or Conscience)

Friday, June 25th, 2010

Inspired by  The Senate unemployment bill founders (Ezra Klein, WashingtonPost.com 6/24/10), Senate again blocks emergency aid (Washington Post 6/25/10).

Today, 1.2 million Americans loose their unemployment benefits,

Not something that a great nation in economic crisis befits.

In spite of Senate Dems’ attempts to compromise,

They ultimately didn’t get any Republican allies.

Every single Republican voted against the bill,

Which for the unemployed is a bitter pill.

Nor does it help our nation’s economic prospects,

Since unemployment compensation has very high stimulative effects.

Unlike with high income tax cuts, the unemployed spend what they receive,

Which helps our national Great Recession to relieve.

Repubs refused (how quickly they their old spending ways forget),

Even though the cost was almost completely offset.

What they really disliked was closing the deferred interest loophole

Which lets investment managers profit tax-free from the funds they control.

Blue Dog Ben Nelson joined Repubs in opposing the measure,

Thereby incurring his Dem colleagues’ displeasure.

Unfortunately, Nelson isn’t up for election for two more years

(Perhaps unemployed Nebraskans can be reminded when that election nears).

But Ben, it’s not really you I blame,

Though you’ve become a Republican in almost all but name.

It’s normal that not everyone in each party hews

To the party leadership’s views.

Which brings me to my concluding point

That it’s the GOP that is out of joint.

As usual, they remain the Party of No,

With no dissension allowed or offered from below.

For many years, bipartisan compromise has made our system work,

But now the GOP has gone berserk.

They oppose for opposition’s sake,

Obama’s and the Dems’ back to break.

Democracy dies

Without compromise.

But that’s appears OK with the GOP

If necessary to regain the majority.

Here’s Rachel’s 6/24/10 report on Senate Democrats’ efforts to gain Republican support for a second mini-stimulus bill. As Rachel reports, after all the concessions and shrinking, the number of GOP votes gained was… zero. Note in particular the floor speech by Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) and her use of the “bikini graph” showing how job growth went dramatically negative under Bush and has been recovering under Obama.
