Winning! (or: The Greatest Fool is He Who Fools Himself)

Friday, April 1st, 2011

In honor of April Fools Day today and the continuation of Tea Party foolishness, inspired in particular by GOP freshmen in House resist potential budget compromise (Washington Post 4/01/11) .

“We are winning the battle.” – Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.)

“I think the American people won round one.” – House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA)

“By picking a fight and winning this one small step toward fiscal discipline, the American people will see… that we can fight and we can win.” – Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.)

“Winning!” – Charlie Sheen

When you need to talk about dollars and sense

(Or what for the country actually makes sense),

Ignore the likes of Bachmann, Cantor, and Pence.

They just stand there maniacally grinning;

Deluding themselves that they’re really winning.

After all, to convincingly deceive others, you have to deceive yourself—

A lie is much more convincing if one believes it oneself.

That’s why Tea Party freshmen are standing strong,

Even if what they’re standing firm on is wrong.

And the GOP “leaders” that cater to that crud?

Maybe they just don’t have enough tiger blood.

Here’s your theme music, Fooling Yourself by Styx. Speaking of drugs, front man James Young seems a little zoned out at the beginning (move the slider back to the beginning to watch that).

Here’s Cantor speaking (optimistically) last month about how the GOP will not need to compromise and that the cuts won’t hurt the economy like most economists say it will. Cantor has been taking a harder line position than Boehner. Is he laying in wait to attack Boehner for compromising as a way to increase his own power?

Here’s Hardball’s 4/01/11 report on yesterday’s Tea Party rally.
