Santorum’s War on Christianity

February 18th, 2012

A follow-up to Not a Real Christian and Sanctum Santorum, inspired by Rick Santorum’s statement about mainline Protestantism no longer being truly Christian.

“We all know that this country was founded on a Judeo-Christian ethic but the Judeo-Christian ethic was a Protestant Judeo-Christian ethic, sure the Catholics had some influence, but this was a Protestant country and the Protestant ethic, mainstream, mainline Protestantism, and of course we look at the shape of mainline Protestantism in this country and it is in shambles, it is gone from the world of Christianity as I see it.” – Rick Santorum in a recently-surfaced 2008 speech

Oh, the humanity,

The political insanity;

Oh the inanity

And unparalleled vanity,

Of Rick Santorum’s War on Christianity.

But as Rick explains, he’s not the one making war,

Because Lutherans like me aren’t Christian anymore.

He’s not attacking Christians because we don’t make the grade,

Having from the Sanctum Santorum strayed.

We have from our Puritan roots meandered

And so fail to meet Rick’s rigorous standard.

Now, instead of being politically pandered,

We’re being by Santorum slandered.

Who made Rick the Christian purity decider,

The religious wheat from chaff divider?

Who made this member of a small minority

The unquestioned and unquestionable authority?

Like other Pharisees, he’s self-appointed,

And then by Religious Right followers anointed.

The Constitution (not God) gave us separation of Church and State.

Will voters give Rick the chance, his theocracy to create?

Rick, my personal (and I hopeAmerica’s) answer is nope:

Protestants became Protestants because we didn’t want a Pope.
