Rubio

February 11th, 2013

Inspired by The Republican Savior (Time.com 2/07/13), Looking for answers, Republicans turn to Rubio (Karen Tumulty and Manuel Roig-Franzia, Washington Post 2/11/13 page A1), and Bob Dylan.

“There is only one savior, and it is not me. #Jesus.” – Marco Rubio tweet

Republicans need a Savior, and Rubio’s now it,

Though Marco modestly says that sandal doesn’t fit.

There’s only one Heavenly Savior, Rubio says,

But doesn’t rule out the earthly equivalent ( running for Pres).

(Of course, this may all just be to tease us,

And Marco will henceforth sign all his tweets as “Jesus.”)

Senator, not that I want your career path to impugn,

But some pundits say you’re peaking too soon.

Giving the SOTU response is also a big gamble:

It could be a final career chapter, or just the preamble.

(Bobby Jindal still hasn’t lived his SOTU response down

In which he came across as a uncannily creepy clown.)

So assuming your own response doesn’t go horribly wrong,

Feel free to use my lyrics below as your new theme song.

***

Here’s your theme music, Silvio, by the great Bob Dylan, along with my modified lyrics below.

Silvio

Rubio

Stake my future on a hell of a past. Stake the GOP’s future on bringing back the past.
Looks like tomorrow is a coming on fast. Looks like tomorrow is a coming on fast.
Ain’t complaining about what I got. Can’t stop complaining about what “they’ve” got.
Seen better times but who has not. Seen better times but who has not.

Silvio silver and gold Rubio, just 41 years old
Won’t buy back the beat of a heart grown cold. Wants to warm up a party grown cold.
Silvio I gotta go Rubio, he’s gotta go
Find out something only dead men know. Find out something only Democrats know.

Honest as the next jade rolling that stone. The GOP’s future is sinkin’ like a stone.
When I come and knockin’ don’t throw me no bone. They’re tryin’ hard their most extreme members to disown.
I’m an old boll weevil looking for a home. He’s a new boll weevil looking for a home.
If you don’t like it you can leave me alone. If you don’t like it you can leave him alone.

I can snap my fingers and require the rain He can snap his fingers and require the rain
From a clear blue sky and turn it off again. From a clear blue sky and turn it off again.
I can stroke your body and relieve your pain He can stroke your body and relieve your pain
And charm the whistle off an evening train. And run a winning presidential campaign.

Find out something only dead men know Find out something only Democrats know.

Give what I got until I got no more. The poor should give what they got until they’ve got no more.
I take what I get until I even the score. The rich take what they want, and no one evens the score.
You know I love you and further more He pretends to love you and further more
When it’s time to go you got an open door. When it’s time to go you got an open door.

I can tell your fancy I can tell your plain He can pretend to be fancy and pretend to be plain
You give something up for everything you gain. And help one percenters increase their gain.
Since every pleasure’s got an edge of pain, The 99% still get nothing but pain,
Pay for your ticket and don’t complain. And somehow middle class Republicans don’t complain.

One of these days and it won’t be long One of these days and it won’t be long
Going down the valley and sing my song. The GOP will have to change its song.
I will sing it loud and sing it strong Marco sings it loud and sings it strong
Let the echo decide if I was right or wrong. Let Fox’s echo decide if he’s right or wrong.

If you like Dylan, read this autobiography, Chronicles: Volume One (sadly, there’s no volume 2). There are a few other autobiographies written or co-written by Dylan (find them by clicking on the preceding link, and then on “related books”). I’ve only read this one so far, and it’s excellent. Dylan is as good at writing prose as he is at writing music, and this book really gives you a flavor for his life, especially the early years. Also, be sure to get the Scorsese documentary, and the Bootleg CD series (sold separately as vol. 1-3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8). The latter contains a lot of previously unreleased material, as well as different and very interesting versions of songs recorded on other albums.
