Republican Care Tactics

March 12th, 2010

A follow up to the earlier piece in our reconciliation series, inspired by The Democrats path to destruction (Michael Gerson, Washington Post 2/24/10) and McConnell warns House Democrats on reconciliation (Washington Post 3/10/10). I find it so touching that Republicans care so much about Dems that they don’t want us to hurt ourselves by trying reconciliation

“Because the legacy of his presidency is at stake, or because of his pride, or because he is ideologically committed to an expanded public role in health care, Obama is pressuring Democratic members to join a suicide pact. When a president doesn’t care about his party, his party eventually ceases to care about him.” — Michael Gerson, Washington Post 2/24/10

“House Democrats will have to decide whether they want to trust the Senate to fix their political problems… They will be voting, when they pass the Senate bill, to endorse the Cornhusker Kickback, the Louisiana Purchase, the Gator-aid, the closed-door deal, the special deal for the unions, which may or may not bother any Democrats, I don’t know.” – Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY Jelly) (Washington Post 3/10/10)

“What the president is doing is asking House Democrats to hold hands, jump off a cliff and hope Harry Reid catches them.” – Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) (Washington Post 3/10/10)

“I heard the Republican leader of the Senate the other day. He’s warning Democrats ‘you better be careful about voting for this. It could hurt your.’ Now I don’t know how sincere the Republican leader is about the best interests of Democrats. He’s been very generous with advice.  – President Obama 3/10/10 in St. Charles, MO.

Mitch and Lamar, thanks for your concern.

That’s nice you worry about Dems, but is that hypocrisy I discern?

The fact is, even if Senate Dems didn’t vote for reconciliation,

You and your fellow Repubs could still be their salvation,

Helping eliminate the Louisiana Purchase and Cornhusker Kickback.

After all, reconciliation will mainly get rid of those things you attack.

And you Mr. Gerson, but your Party affiliation

Makes me doubt your five reasons why Dems should fear reconciliation.

My suspicion is, I have to confess,

That you want to undermine what little confidence Dems possess.

So while I think you all for being so nice,

Forgive me if I don’t think Dems should take your advice.

Here are Countdown’s 3/10/10, 3/11/10, and 3/12/10 reports about trusting the Senate to follow through on reconciliation, a possible technique to avoid that, and one more attempt by Bridgekeeper Boehner to kill the bill.

Here’s President Obama in St. Charles MO responding to Mitch McConnell’s worries for the welfare of Democrats. The video is set to start with the quote above about McConnell, but by all means go back and listen to the whole speech; it’s a good one.

Here’s Stephen Colbert’s 3/10/10 report. “You can’t spell scare without c-a-r-e.”
