Read My Lips: No New Jobs

August 30th, 2012

Inspired by Romney’s ’12 million jobs’ promise (Glenn Kessler, WashingtonPost.com 8/30/12 23:03).

“And unlike the President, I have a plan to create 12 million new jobs.” – Mitt Romney’s acceptance speech

When Romney made his “12 million jobs” promise,

The audience was elated.

But economists predict if current policies continue,

12 million new jobs will be created.

Romney shouldn’t claim

To be a hero

When the number of jobs he’ll create

Is really zero.

But we don’t need to read

Romney’s lips to understand.

All we need

Is to read his plan.

Here’s Romney’s acceptance speech (the “12 million jobs” promise is at the 28” mark). NB: Just because Romney’s “promise” represents zero net new jobs created doesn’t mean that he’ll keep that promise. As an economist, based on his policies, I think it’s much more likely that he and the anti-government, anti-spending, anti-stimulus GOP base will do worse, possibly even plunging America into another recession.
