Inspired by Gayle Trotter, dedicated protector of a woman’s right to choose…assault weapons (even if the woman making the choice is imaginary).
“An assault weapon in the hands of a young woman defending her babies in her home becomes a defense weapon. And the peace of mind that a woman has as she is facing three, four, or five violent attackers, intruders in her home with her children screaming in the background, the peace of mind that she has knowing she has a scary looking gun, gives her more courage when she’s fighting hardened, violent criminals.” — Gayle Trotter testifying to the Senate Judiciary Committee this afternoon “Gayle Trotter, the hearing is about legislation that would ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines and you used an anecdote of someone defending themselves not using one of those weapons. In fact, in the hearing there was not a single anecdote presented by you, or any Republican, or anyone else of anyone successfully defending themselves with an assault weapon and/or a high capacity magazine. Every single weapon incident that was mentioned was of more traditional firearms that would not in any way be affected by any legislation contemplated by anyone. Could you not find a single example anywhere in the country of anyone successfully defending themselves with the kind of weapons used in our uniquely American massacres?” – Lawrence’s follow-up question to Ms. Trotter tonight on The Last Word
Gayle Trotter and the NRA
Would have much preferred to say:
“Here are 20 women who are assault weapons backers
Because they used them to fight off attackers.
They couldn’t find even one such case
Anytime or anyplace.
(If you have a case, you make it.
If you don’t, you fake it.)
The imaginary woman Gayle invents
Needs her Bushmaster for imaginary self-defense.
She needs it for her peace of mind:
Taking it away would be so unkind!
So if you want to know why
Those 20 kids had to die,
It’s so Gayle Trotter can calm
Her pretend worried mom.
How dare you, Lawrence, that pretend mom’s right-to-choose stifle
By not letting her have an assault rifle!
(And by the way, Gayle, was it planned
That you’d be Wayne LaPierre’s right hand?)
Here’s The Last Word’s 1/30/13 report, including clips from Gayle Trotter’s testimony today (the quote’s at the 16” mark). Good job calling her out, Lawrence (that starts at the 9”45 mark). Lying extremists like her all too often are allowed to get away with their misrepresentations and non-answers. But there is no pretend mom who successfully used a Bushmaster to fight off criminal attackers; just a real mom whose troubled son took her Bushmaster, killed her, and then used it to slaughter twenty first-graders.
