Penance (or: Why the Religious Right Believes America Should Suffer for Our Sin of Debt)

August 11th, 2011

A follow-up to MAD, inspired by Tea Partiers Cheer the Downgrade of America’s Credit Rating (Crooks and Liars 8/07/11) and Downgrade unhinges market: Sell-off wipes out $1.2 trillion in value (Washington Post 8/09/11).

“We don’t deserve a triple-A rating… I’d welcome a downgrade, I really would. I think it would be the pain from which we’d have a gain.” – Fox News pundit Neil Cavuto

“We just heard from Standard & Poor’s when they dropped—when they dropped our credit rating what they said is we don’t have an ability to repay our debt. That’s what the final word was from them. I was proved right in my position.” – Michele Bachmann at the GOP Iowa debate in response to a question about her debt ceiling position

“And they shall accept of the punishment of their iniquity: because, even because they despised my judgments, and because their soul abhorred my statutes.” — Leviticus 26:43

It’s not enough to show regret

For the sin of accumulating debt.

We must suffer so our sins can be expiated,

Which is why Teavangelicals the debt crisis created.

For them, it’s crucial that the sinner pays

For the evil of his or her ways.

They wanted America to pay penance for the sins of our past,

And lamented when the debt deal passed.

They were disappointed Americahad escaped financial disaster,

Which they’d hoped would make Armageddon come faster.

Then from the debt deal’s ashes did emerge

Standard & Poor’s, God’s righteous scourge.

Finally, America got what we deserve

When S&P our triple-A rating declined to preserve.

The markets took a hit and confidence was shaken–

$2.4 trillion in market value was forsaken.

Are they enjoying their schadenfreude

At the expense of 401K owners and the unemployed?

Didn’t Michele seem just a little too happy

And her answer to the downgrade question a little too snappy?

With America suitably chastened, they’re almost giddy,

Though sad they didn’t get more reps on the super committee.

But that’s a negligible price to pay

To bring America a little closer to Judgement Day.

Here’s a group of Tea Party/Religious right (they’re increasingly interchangeable) politicians, pundits, and activists showing that America must atone for her financial sins.

Sorry, wrong video. That was the self-flagellation scene from the Ingmar Bergman classic The Seventh Seal. Here’s the Teavangelicals video clip, followed by a 8/09/11 Last Word montage of Tea Party default glee. Are you going to bow down and worship their self-destructive idiocy as well?

Here’s Tea Party/Religious right Queen Michele Bachmann saying “I told you so” at the Ames debate. Leaving aside that she’s completely misrepresenting what S&P said, doesn’t she seem a little too happy about the downgrade?
