Inspired by Michigan’s new (Republican) financial overseer law and it’s use by Republican Gov. Rick Snyder in Detroit and Benton Harbor.

“The giving of this park to the city of Benton Harbor has been to Mrs. Klock and myself, the happiest moment of our lives. The deed of this park in the courthouse of St. Joseph will live forever. Perhaps some of you do not own a foot of ground, remember then, that this is your park, it belongs to you. …The beach is yours, the drive is yours, the dunes are yours, all yours. It is not so much a gift from my wife and myself, it’s a gift from a little child. See to it that the park is the children’s.” – Speech by John Klock in 1917 when he donated the park to the city “forever” in memory of his departed daughter Jean

Outside overseers are brought in when the Master needs someone tough,

And doesn’t think the locals aren’t being tough enough.

In Detroit, the overseer is considering shutting the Catherine Ferguson Academy down,

In spite of its success teaching pregnant teens and moms (and now national renown).

In Benton Harbor, the overseer wants to town’s once-beautiful park by the lake

Into a private exclusive luxury golf club to make.

(Coincidentally, as noted by Rachel and other reporters,

The club is being developed by the governor’s financial and political supporters.)

Should Michiganders allow continued Republican local power stripping

When communities like Detroit and Benton Harbor are already taking a whipping?

For those from whom more and more is being taken way,

Remember: There is gonna be another day.

So if you don’t want to be Gov. Snyder’s slave,

Start off by signing this petition, Jean Klock Park to save.

Then the next time you get a chance,

Vote to take the whips out of Republican hands.

Here’s video of the outside overseer’s arrival and assumption of authority, in spite of local politicians’ pleas to the Governor that they be allowed to retain some small degree of local control.

Sorry, wrong video. That was a actually a clip from the TV miniseries Roots. Here’s the video clip I meant to show, Rachel Maddow’s 4/22/11 report on the overseers appointed for Detroit and Benton Harbor. In Detroit, the overseer plans to shut down the Catherine Ferguson Academy, a successful school for pregnant teens and single teen moms.
