Obvious

May 7th, 2012

Inspired by Mitt Romney’s failure today to challenge a supporter’s statement—made directly to Romney—that President Obama should be tried for treason.

“We have a president that is operating outside the structure of our Constitution… Yeah, I do agree he should be tried for treason.” – woman at Romney rally in Ohio

“I obviously don’t agree that he should be tried.” – Mitt Romney, after being asked later about his lack of reaction to the woman’s comment

“Not to speak is to speak.” – Dietrich Bonhoeffer

“Obvious: (1) easily seen, recognized, or understood; open to view or knowledge; evident: an obvious advantage; (2) lacking in subtlety.” – Dictionary.com

Dear Mr. Romney:

How is it obvious that you disagree?

It doesn’t look at all obvious to me.

When a candidate smiles and nods

And everyone in the audience applauds,

It seems more obvious that the reverse is true,

And you were just glad she said it instead of you.

You have been playing a dangerous game,

Inciting such thinking with your constant blame.

You seek to ride that wave of hate,

Which you contribute to when you the President berate.

You conveniently sidestep any suggestion of fault,

While liberally sprinkling those wounds with salt.

Your explanation of Machiavellian hypocrisy rings:

“It wasn’t me who said those things!”

Even if you don’t believe it yourself,

You’re overjoyed others repeat what you hint at yourself.

When other people say it, you have deniability

And can maintain your aura of respectability.

But your silence such views implicitly endorses,

Which your own inflammatory rhetoric enforces.

That’s how you’ve decided to make your general election case,

Trying to appeal to the middle without alienating the base.

That’s clearly the tactic your campaign is pursing.

Actually, I guess it is pretty obvious what you’re doing.

Here’s your theme music, It Wasn’t Me by George Thorogood and the Destroyers.  It may not have been you that said it, Mitt, but like Pastor Bonhoeffer said, “not to speak is to speak.” This is not some harmless statement that it’s fine to let slide. As the wanted poster above shows—almost identical to the wanted posters of JFK being circulated in Dallas in the days and weeks leading up to his assassination—this is very, very serious.
