“In lieu of more wasteful stimulus spending to re-straighten the monument, we should go all-in on ways to invigorate growth by further cutting taxes for the rich and completely deregulating Wall Street. If we do that, there’s a chance that those wealthy people might donate a few of the hundreds of billions of dollars they save to a privately funded trickle-down effort to fix the monument. After all, tax cuts and de-regulation always fix everything.” – House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA)

“Obama may not have caused the Washington Monument to tip over, but he made it worse.” – Mitt Romney

“These are hard times. American families have to pick themselves back up again when they fall down. Why should the Washington Monument be any different?” – Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH)

“The Founding Fathers built this monument to George Washington, the Father of our Country, and they would not want it re-straightened if that means raising the debt ceiling.” – Michele Bachmann

“Keep your dirty government hands away from my Washington Monument.” – member of a group of Tea Partiers in DC to protest the monument’s government takeover

I do believe that the Washington Monument issue has been politicized. I think there are a substantial number of engineers who have manipulated data so that they will have dollars rolling into their project to re-straighten it.” – Rick Perry

“OK, how about we compromise and re-straighten it up part of the way.” – President Obama
