NOH8 is Great

August 5th, 2010

Inspired by the Prop 8 OVERTURNED: Gay Marriage Ban Struck Down In California  (Huffington Post 8/04/10), Prop 8 ban reactions, Judy Shepard: Judge Walker’s Prop 8 Verdict Moves America Closer to its Ideals (Huffington Post 8/05/10), and Judge strikes California’s ban on same-sex marriage, Proposition 8  (Washington Post 8/05/10).

Yesterday was a good day,

And not just for Californians who are gay.

It was a good day for our nation,

Which has earned another measure of admiration.

It was a good day for liberty

(Not so much for those who like Tea).

Of course, “moral” issue right wingers are on the warpath,

Spewing out their hateful wrath.

They were particularly angry at Judge Walker,

Who now appears to have at least one new stalker.

NOM’s Maggie Gallagher called him a biased activist judge,

Though when asked why he’s biased she proceeded to fudge.

(Walker’s critics know it doesn’t sound good to say

That they think he’s biased because he’s openly gay.)

Interestingly, Walker was nominated by Saint Ronald the Great,

But Dems opposed him as too conservative during Senate debate.

He was rejected, but then renominated by George H.W. Bush,

And the GOP was able his nomination to successfully push.

That doesn’t sound like a liberal activist judge to me,

But then maybe I haven’t been drinking enough Tea.

And as to the claim that Walker is “biased,”

I personally have no doubt that his character is the highest.

But if one thinks that what Ms. Gallagher says is true,

Then straight judges will have to recuse themselves too.

We won this battle, but the war will continue,

As Prop 8 supporters call for appellate review.

Ultimately, the Supremes will make the call,

And then (hopefully) there’ll be liberty and justice for all.

And thank you Sarah for you clarification of judicial tyranny:

It’s when you and the judge disagree.

Here are Hardball’s and Rachel’s 8/04/10 reports (the latter including an interview with the victorious plaintiffs’ lawyers), followed by Keith’s compelling Special Comment. Rachel again does a great job talking about the fundamental American principle that individual rights are not up for majority vote.

Here’s the Daily Show’s 8/05/10 “Californigaytion” report, followed by Stephen Colbert’s emotional plea for action to nullify the ruling’s impact. The Daily Show report includes the video clip of Maggie Gallagher from the National Organization for Marriage on Anderson Cooper (at the 6” mark) ducking the issue of why she thinks Judge Walker is biased. (Jon also mentions Elena Kagan’s confirmation.)

PS on Tea Party views on gay rights: In theory, Tea Partiers should support marriage equality, due to their focus on limited government and individual freedoms. In fact some do (16%, according to a New York Times/CBS poll ). That’s admittedly not a lot, but I suppose it’s not bad when you compare it to the percentage of Teabaggers that believe other really crazy stuff. Still, it does show the selectivity of their support for individual liberty, which in my view completely justifies my mocking of them above (plus, “tea” rhymes with a lot of words).
