Like a Lion (or, The Democratic Pride)

March 30th, 2010

Inspired by passage this month, finally, of the healthcare reform bill, as capped off by President Obama’s signature this morning of the reconciliation bill. For more info, read With health bill complete, Obama allows himself a moment of celebration (Washington Post 3/30/10).

It is said March comes in like a lamb and goes out like a lion.

And to think some Dems wanted to give up without tryin’!

Everyone thought Obama was a lamb.

It became increasingly popular, his “passivism” to slam.

I have to admit, I sometimes felt that way too

When Obama didn’t do what I wanted him to.

But now his strategy was vindicated

And Democrats are understandably elated.

Sure, I wish we’d gotten more

(It’s too bad the Medicare buy-in In was shown the door).

But remember when the odds to get passage didn’t seem good,

And nobody thought Democrats could?

Remember when this whole healthcare thing commenced

What the Dems and Obama were up against.

There was universal opposition from Big Health

Out to protect their ill-gotten wealth.

There was constant misrepresentation by the GOP

(And it’s in-house news network on TV).

There were death panels, Teabaggers, and of course Scott Brown,

Whose sole raison d’etre was to bring healthcare reform down.

But healthcare reform was never how the GOP or Big Health portrayed it.

it’s been a long and winding road, but we finally made it.

And like the President says, this is just a first step,

So keep up the pressure on your Congressional rep.

This historical accomplishment can’t be overstated.

Doing this kind of thing is why democracy was created.

And for those Dems still concerned about November,

Supposedly unfair procedure is something most voters won’t even remember.

Sure, Repubs will continue to mobilize their devout

And try to fill people’s minds with dismay and doubt.

Sure, Repubs will continue their attacks night and day,

But they would have done that anyway.

But don’t worry, be happy, it’ll all work out

(Taking a risk here and there is what leadership’s all about).

And be proud that this promise was not denied;

Proud to be lead by the head of our pride.

Finally, this month, our Lion roared,

And Democrats’ faith in him (and themselves) was restored.

Here’s President Obama and the Dems final show-down with House Minority Leader Boehner and the House Repubs, followed by Obama’s victory speech.

Sorry, wrong video. That was the showdown between Simba and Skar in The Lion King, followed by Simba makes his “victory speech” and assuming his rightful place as the pride’s leader. Here’s the (metaphorical) show-down (Obama’s final speech  before the vote, in Fairfax, VA on March 19), followed by Obama’s victory speech after the vote.

Here’s your theme music for today, Hail Up the Lion by Morgan Heritage.

Here’s another song that well describes the Long and Winding Road to healthcare reform, by the Beatles.

And here’s another appropriate song, Don’t Worry, Be Happy by Bobby McFarlane.

And if you haven’t read it yet (or if you want to read it again), here’s my earlier post about Obama the Lion King, Meet the Spartans?
