It’s Complicated (or, Nuke Baby Nuke?)

June 8th, 2010

Inspired by BP begins capturing oil as Obama makes third trip to Gulf Coast (WashingtonPost.com 6/04/10 5:28 p.m.), Nuclear Option on Gulf Oil Spill? No Way, U.S. Says (New York Times 6/02/10), The Oil Spill Is Obama’s Fault (Paul Krugman, NewYorkTimes.com 4/30/10), Yes, people fault the response to the spill. But why? (WashingtonPost.com 6/07/10), and the news reports below.

Top kill, top hat, junk shot, cut and cap—

Nothing seems to work, so cut the crap.

Come on BP, just get it done.

Otherwise, it’ll just keep getting less and less fun.

After all, poor Tony wants his life back.

(Sorry Tony, but your priorities seem a little out of whack.)

And for you rightists who think the solution is to nuke,

I have nothing to offer but the sternest rebuke:

That would create an even worse disaster.

Do you want the Gulf to die even faster?

When nothing seems to work

Is not the time to go berserk.

Nor is it time to allow more drilling

When the Gulf with oil is already filling.

Should Obama be acclaimed

Or blamed?

It takes a while to solve all the problems the last eight years created

(And Jon, it really IS complicated).

What to do, what to do?

I don’t know. How about you?

Here’s your theme music, Complicated by Avril Lavigne.

Here’s another applicable song (in honor of President Obama’s statement that he won’t “rest or be satisfied“ until the leak is stop), Satisfaction by the Rolling Stones.

Here are scenes from the two movies from which our Daily Show reports take their names, The Killing Fields (an excellent but very intense movie) and It’s Complicated (I haven’t seen it, but it looks good and Alec Baldwin is hilarious in everything). Unfortunately, the Gulf of Mexico is now becoming a complicated killing field in its own right.
