Happy World Oceans Day

June 8th, 2010

Today is World Oceans Day, but coincidentally also day 50 of the Gulf of Mexico oil disaster.

“The first observance of World Oceans Day allows us to highlight the many ways in which oceans contribute to society. It is also an opportunity to recognize the considerable challenges we face in maintaining their capacity to regulate the global climate, supply essential ecosystem services and provide sustainable livelihoods and safe recreation.” – UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announcing the first World Oceans Day one year ago today

This is only the second World Oceans Day.

Should we celebrate it anyway?

BP has celebrated by dumping 40+ million gallons of oil into the sea,

Which doesn’t seem like a good thing to me.

(Because of the cap, they dumped slightly less today than before,

But oil unfortunately continues into the Gulf to pour.)

When this spill is “over” we will finally learn,

Or just to the same old ways return?
