Happy Fathers Day

June 20th, 2010

Dad, today’s your day.

But as with Mom, I’m not sure what to say.

The Bible says honor your father (and mother too),

But I didn’t always do a good job of honoring you.

I know there were times I was a holy terror.

Now that I’m a dad, I realize my way’s error.

Still, you didn’t give up on me or the others,

A daughter and two constantly fighting brothers.

The three of us were a handful, but you did the best you could.

Overall, I think you did pretty good.

(I was outwardly the good one,

But mostly because you didn’t know about some of the things I’d done.)

Fathers teach and protect,

And sometimes (in our case, often) correct.

I guess that’s part of the teaching,

Though I at times find it hard to avoid overreaching.

Now that I’m a father too,

I understand what you went through.

It’s not easy to let go,

And things don’t work out perfectly, I know.

But I guess that’s not part of being a Dad,

Which on balance, I have to say, isn’t bad.

The good and bad go hand and glove.

But as I’ve learned, the constant is
