A follow-up to Mourdocks, inspired by Mourdock rape comment adds to election-year furor over social issues (Karen Tumulty,WashingtonPost.com 10/24/12).
“Life is a gift from God, and I think even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen.” — Richard Mourdock at last night’s Senatorial debate
Dick Mourdock thinks pregnancy resulting from rape
Is a gift from God from which women should have no escape.
He thinks abortion should be illegal, with no rape exception
But that’s no pleasant surprise in a fancy gift bag,
And it comes with a very high price tag.
Mourdock asked that his phrasing be forgiven,
But in a way, he himself has women a great gift given.
He reminds women that Todd Akin was the GOP rule, not the exception:
They and many others support banning abortion with no rape exception.
So thank you, Dick, for making that crystal clear,
Especially with the election so near.
Here’s Mourdock’s statement at the Oct. 23 debate.
Here’s Stephen Colbert’s 10/24/12 advice to GOP candidates considering public pronouncements about rape.
PS to Karen: Your article discussed the back-and-forth on exceptions for federally-funded abortions, as if that remains the main issue. It is not. The main issue regarding abortion restriction and exceptions to those restrictions is now becoming the right itself, regardless of funding. Mourdock and other rabidly anti-abortion Republicans want to overturn Roe and make abortion illegal with no rape/incest exception both at the state and federal levels. And Mitt Romney has said that he’d “delighted” to sign a bill prohibiting all abortion.
