God Hates Jesus? (or, Touchdown Jesus Taken Out of the Game)

June 16th, 2010

A follow up to our earlier posts on the subject, but from a different perspective, inspired by Lightning: No respect for religion (Washington Post 6/16/10) about the destruction by lightning of the six-story-tall “King of Kings” statue (also known as “Touchdown Jesus” because of the position of his arms) at the Solid Rock Church in Monroe, Ohio.

Touchdown Jesus has gone up in flame.

Pat Robertson declines to say if God’s to blame.

Pat and his ilk are quick to see God’s hand in disaster.

“I’m just glad it didn’t hit the home next-door for at-risk women,” said the pastor.

“I told them, ‘It looks like Jesus took a hit for you last night,’” she said.

“It’s just fiberglass,” she told the reporter (that’s better than people dead).

I find her view much more sensible

Than the Pat Robertson and company one, which is indefensible.

By their logic, this is God’s message that Christianity is wrong,

And that the Religious Right has been worshiping the wrong God all along.

And for the “God Hates Fags” cult, does this mean God hates Jesus Christ?

If that’s the case, no lesser signal would have sufficed.

But if Jesus really is God’s son and the path to eternity,

Why would God make such a forceful rebuttal of paternity?

Or maybe it just means God is mad at the Religious Right

(That’s one that might even be at least partially right).

While the latter is tempting, I don’t really believe any of that stuff.

Still, it’s fun to periodically call the Religious Right’s bluff.

Here’s the 6/15/10 AP report from immediately after the incident.

Here’s a later CBS News report.

Here’s your theme music, Mercedes Benz by the immortal Janis Joplin. I don’t mean to mock Christianity by using this song (I am after all a PK), but I do want to express my personal disagreement that God directly determines every event in life, big and small, good and bad, as some (but by no means all) Christians believe.

The church says they will rebuild Touchdown Jesus, in which case it will return, Terminator-like. A propos, CNN iReporters are apparently already referring to the statue as “Terminator Jesus” due to this promise of return (“I’ll be back”) and the skeletal form it’s been reduced to (watch this scene from the movie and leave a comment to let me know what you think).

Sorry, wrong clip. That was the MadTV Terminator parody, which coincidentally brings us back to our original theme. Here’s the Terminator clip. This one’s from Terminator 3, but the Terminators of course appear in all of them. I wanted to use the awesome opening battle scene from Terminator 2, but unfortunately it’s not embeddable (click here to watch it on Youtube). All great movies (Terminator Salvation also wasn’t bad, but I have to admit I liked the other three better).
