Give Peas a Chance

July 11th, 2011

Inspired by the President’s press conference today.

“I will not sign a 30-day or a 60-day or a 90-day extension.  That is just not an acceptable approach.  And if we think it’s going to be hard — if we think it’s hard now, imagine how these guys are going to be thinking six months from now in the middle of election season where they’re all up.  It’s not going to get easier.  It’s going to get harder.  So we might as well do it now — pull off the Band-Aid; eat our peas.  Now is the time to do it.” – President Obama

“The unique phytonutrients in green peas also provide us with key antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits. Included in these phytonutrients are some recently-discovered green pea phytonutrients called saponins. Due to their almost exclusive appearance in peas, these phytonutrients actually contain the scientific word for peas (Pisum) in their names: pisumsaponins I and II, and pisomosides A and B. When coupled with other phytonutrients in green peas – including phenolic acids like ferulic and caffeic acid, and flavanols like catechin and epicatechin – the combined impact on our health may be far-reaching.” – World’s Healthiest Foods

Republicans are trying to fool America again

To grow the economy, we need to do stimulus again.

It’s true that we need to reduce our debt

(And raise taxes too, but probably not yet).

But we also need to create jobs and economic growth,

To do either of which Republicans are loath.

(They’d prefer continued recession and voter disaffection

In order to reduce Obama’s chances for reelection.)

But can we have deficit reduction and economic growth?

Yes — we can and must simultaneously have both!

Those two goals are not at all mutually exclusive.

In fact, to reduce the deficit, jobs and growth must be inclusive.

The GOP policy of cutting taxes and spending won’t do the trick

(Please America, don’t be fooled again by that same old trick).

Cutting spending on its own will just drive the economy further into the ground.

To get both reduced deficits and growth, we need to do it the other way around.

People can’t pay taxes or buy stuff if they’re unemployed,

Ignorance of which will cause our fragile recovery to be destroyed.

That’s something Republicans seem to have a hard time comprehending

(We also need increased revenue and a long-term reduction in spending).

Our economy’s nutritional needs are highly complex:

The need for short-term spending with deficit reduction intersects.

I know, they hate anything not specifically mentioned in the Constitution,

And any economic policy that goes beyond their own simple solution.

(Maybe the reason they can’t stand it

Is because they don’t fully understand it.)

But please, GOP, give our economy the complex nutrition it requires

(We can even keep taxes where they are now—until the Bush tax cut expires).

I know, it’s not as macho as just eating red meat,

But without veggies our national diet is incomplete.

So extend the debt ceiling, pass a jobs bill, and stop preaching.

Otherwise, the impact on our economic health will be far-reaching.
