Feeding Stray Animals

January 29th, 2010

Inspired by Jon Stewart’s 1/25/10 report (watch it below) on South Carolina Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer, who said that giving lower income children subsidized school lunch is like feeding stray animals: it makes them keep coming back for more and allows them to keep reproducing.

“My grandmother was not a highly educated woman, but she told me as a small child to quit feeding stray animals. You know why? Because they breed. You’re facilitating the problem if you give an animal or a person ample food supply. They will reproduce, especially ones that don’t… think too much further than that. And so what you’ve got to do is you’ve got to curtail that type of behavior. They don’t know any better.” – SC Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer (quoted in Wikipedia and WashingtonPost.com)

South Carolina is at it again,

Furnishing fodder for many a late night comedian.

First there was Joe “You Lie” Wilson and Sanford’s hike on the trail,

Then the guy whose “relationship” with a horse put him in jail.

Now there’s the Republican Lieutenant Gov,

Who fits in with the others like a well-made glove.

     Republican Lieutenant Governor Andre Bauer

Wants Gov. Sanford to resign so he can take power.

Sanford’s departure would put Bauer in charge,

But the chances for that now don’t seem large.

Bauer recently made an unfortunate remark

That to the “good old days” of Southern apartheid does hark.

He said subsidized school lunch is like feeding a stray:

It just keeps them from going away.

What’s worse, that “free lunch” just allows them to reproduce,

And more (minority) babies into the world introduce.

Letting them go hungry would be much better.

After all, “they don’t know any better.”

And do I detect a racial undertone?

I believe I do, and don’t think I’m alone.

This would have been offensive in the pre-Civil Rights fifties,

But in 2010 – Lieutenant Governor, please!

In my view, Andre should himself resign forthwith

(He’s one guy I wouldn’t care to have dinner with).

His comment with mind-boggling contempt is rife–

There’s no place for such people in public life.

Andre doesn’t even have the excuse of being “old line”–

He’s not even old (he was born in ‘69).

And it’s not like he’s prejudiced, but otherwise responsible and nice—

He’s been in auto accidents at least twice.

He was caught going 60 in a 35 mile zone

And confronted the officer in an “aggressive manner” and tone.

Another time, a policeman caught Lt. Governor Bauer

Driving a state-owned car at over 100 miles per hour.

     Bauer also wanted to create

An “I Believe” state license plate.

The US District Court called it “an effort to purchase political capital with religious coin

And did Bauer’s unconstitutional attempt to proselytize enjoin.

I previously was of the opinion that Sanford should step down,

But now I’m hoping that he’ll stick around.

I’d rather have someone who goes for the occasional hike

Than a racist who belongs in a hospital ward (psych).

People of South Carolina, I’ve said this before:

You say you’re not racist anymore.

But there’s only one way to know without doubt:

Demand that Bauer resign, or vote him out.
