D Day

June 6th, 2010

In honor of the American soldiers whose bravery rescued a continent from tyranny (and not the pretend Teabagger version) 66 years ago today.

Jumping out of landing crafts as machine guns fired–

Would you or I have had what was required?

What did it take to make your way up that beach,

Hoping the other side to reach,

Trying to find a place to break through?

I don’t think I could have done it. Could you?

Impossible, but they did it anyway.

And that’s why this is their day.

Here are scenes from two great movies on the subject, The Longest Day and Saving Private Ryan. The The Longest Day scene is the Utah Beach landing; Henry Fonda plays Brigadier General Theodore Roosevelt Jr., President Teddy Roosevelt’s son, who fought in both world wars and won the Medal of Honor for his bravery on D Day. The Saving Private Ryan scene is from Omaha Beach, and is one of the longest continuous action scenes in film history, which adds to its impact.
