“In all due respect, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs is not directly in charge of the troops. The Secretary of Defense is a political appointee who’s never been in the military.” – Senator John McCain, describing why their opinions on “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” don’t matter

Senator McCain, you of all people should understand

How things work with the chain of command.

Of course the Joint Chiefs aren’t “directly in charge of the troops,”

But then neither are you and your fellow GOP dupes.

SecDef Gates served in the Air Force, contrary to your contention,

So please quit your condescension.

(Funny how when a statement begins “with all due respect,”

It’s usually filled with disrespect.)

It’s also ironic that after you told us for so long

That when the military leadership supported repeal, you’d go along.

Now when that’s happened, you do an about face

And disparage the military leadership you used to embrace.

Senator, I get you don’t want to change the military’s anti-gay rules,

But the only chain you’re in is the

Chain of fools.

Here’s your theme music, Chain of Fools by Aretha Franklin.

Here’s Countdown’s 12/02/10 “worst persons” report (McCain gets the silver).
