Bye Bye Bayh

February 16th, 2010

“There is too much partisanship and not enough progress – too much narrow ideology and not enough practical problem-solving. Even at a time of enormous challenge, the people’s business is not being done.” – Sen. Evan Bayh (D-Indiana), announcing that he is retiring from the Senate

As reported in Bayh’s leaving is latest setback to party (Washington Post 2/16/10), Sen. Evan Bayh has announced that he will not seek a new term in November due to the increasingly bitter partisanship, and little hope for improvement.

Republicans have hit on a brand new tactic,

About which they are quite ecstatic.

Instead of having to win elections,

Just use bitter partisanship to cause defections.

Instead of helping to run the government,

Just create a hostile work environment.

Instead of trying to accomplish something,

Just make sure your opponents accomplish nothing.

Instead of trying to work together,

Just make work stop altogether.

Instead of trying to govern well,

Just make opponents’ lives a living hell.

Party hacks

Stabbing backs

And making partisan attacks.

If the Continental Congress had acted this way,

We’d still be speaking with a British accent today.

If these guys had been in office during the Second World War,

We wouldn’t even be speaking English anymore.

It’s no wonder people are dropping like flies–

That anyone can put up with it is the surprise.

But the real scandal is that those who do this

Seem not to care we’re at the edge of the abyss.

Here’s Senator Bayh’s statement.
