Bonfire of the Insanities

September 8th, 2010

Inspired by Petraeus condemns Fla. church’s plan to burn Korans (Washington Post 9/07/10), Religious leaders condemn plan to burn Koran on Sept. 11 (Washington Post 9/08/10), and MSNBC reports below.

“The act is both ignorant and dangerous… That is neither a patriotic act nor a religious act. I don’t have the vocabulary to denounce the intent or the action going on in that church. It is dangerous for our nation abroad. It is disrespectful of our Constitution. It certainly represents no religion I know, and particularly Christianity it doesn’t represent. There is no way that should take place… We have politicians trying to advance their own partisan careers by dividing this nation on this religious issue. It is inexcusable.” — Interfaith Alliance President Rev. Welton Gaddy on the Rachel Maddow Show discussing a Gainesville Florida church’s plan to publicly burn 1,000 copies of the Koran

The Dove World Outreach Center has big plans

To publicly burn one thousand Korans.

Not only is it a very un-Christian thing to do,

It puts American soldiers and civilians at risk too.

Both religious and military leades have condemned the planned action.

Where then is the GOP leadership’s reaction?

Why not speak out and condemn this heinous offense,

Or will you come to “Reverend” Jones’ defense?

Just when it seemed Republicans couldn’t get any stranger,

Who’d have thunk they wouldn’t care about putting American troops in danger.

Here’s Countdown’s 9/07/10 report about a Florida church’s plan to burn the Koran on Sept. 11 and General Petraus’s plea to organizers not to, given the threat to American troops.

Here’s a scene from the movie from which this post takes its name, Bonfire of the Vanities (based on the Tom Wolfe novel of the same name). Appropriate somehow?

And speaking of outwardly religious figures that are actually evil, here’s the trailer for Assassin’s Creed 2: Bonfire of the Vanities. “Now is the time to repent!”
