As reported in Verdict Reached In Blagojevich Corruption Trial (Huffington Post 8/17/10), Rod Blagojevich (D-IL) has been found guilty on only one of 24 counts.
Blago was found guilty on only one of 24 counts,
A victory for him, by all accounts.
The guilty verdict was lying to federal agents, which is highly illegal,
And stupid on Blago’s part, since what he lied about was legal.
The jury found him innocent on one other charge,
A result the defense had hoped to enlarge.
For all of the other charges, jurors were deadlocked,
A spokesperson revealed as reporters flocked.
The judge has declared a mistrial on the remaining 23
(I’d have found him guilty on more if it had been up to me).
I suspect Blago was guilty of more than was proved,
So it’s good that he’s been from office removed.
Though he rubs me the wrong way, he did create reasonable doubt,
And that’s what jury trials are all about.
Prosecutors immediately announced they’d seek a retrial,
Which seems to me like a case of denial.
(After all, Blago’s already a civilian,
And they already spent over $10 million.)
The one guilty charge carries a penalty of up to $250K and five years in the can–
Still a lot for an otherwise “innocent” man.
In spite of that, Blago doesn’t seem terribly chastened,
As shown by what he said after he to the microphones hastened.
Truth be told, I’m sick of hearing about him every day.
