Birthers Heart Huckabee (or: My Son the Nut)

March 2nd, 2011

Inspired by Huckabee Questions Obama Birth Certificate (New York Times 3/01/11) and Is Mike Huckabee going to get away with this? (Steve Kornacki, Salon.com 3/02/11).

“Don’t you think we deserve to know more about this man?” – right-wing radio host Steve Malzberg

“I would love to know more. What I know is troubling enough. And one thing that I do know is his having grown up in Kenya, his view of the Brits, for example, very different from the average American… His perspective growing up in Kenya with a Kenyan father and grandfather, their view of the Mau Mau revolution in Kenya is very different than ours because he probably grew up hearing that the British were a bunch of imperialists that persecuted his grandfather.” – Mike Huckabee

“Thou shalt not bear false witness.” — Jesus

The fact that Obama grew up in Kenya bothers Mike Huckabee,

Except that Obama grew up in Indonesia and Hawaii.

(Perhaps Huckabee would be consoled

To learn Obama never visited Kenya until he was 26 years old.)

But in spite of his distortion of facts, Huckabee is not skittish

About going on and on about how Obama hates the British.

Huckabee even brazenly avows

That Obama rooted against the Brits for the Mau Maus.

Never mind that nothing Huckabee’s saying is true,

Or that US policy supported anti-colonial movements too.

(A spokesman later said that Huckabee “simply misspoke”—

Hard to believe considering how long he spoke.)

Usually, when one “misspeaks” it’s a word or two,

Not going on and on like Huckabee about all the things he “knew.”

51% of Republican primary voters don’t believe Obama was born in the US,

So Huckabee is performing obeisance to what they profess.

Too bad – I thought he had more integrity.

It looks like 2012 isn’t going to be pretty.

I had hoped for a more civil contest, but this presages anything but,

Since one of the top contenders turns out to be yet another Birther nut.

I’m particularly disappointed that an erstwhile pastor

Would turn out to be such a moral disaster.

As both the Old Testament and Our Savior say

(A commandment all too often broken today):

Don’t bear false witness, my son,

Just because you disagree with someone.

Here’s your theme music (including the Mau Mau reference that makes it that at the 1.5” mark), Hungarian Goulash by satirist Alan Sherman from his record My Son the Nut (hence our subtitle). I used to listen to that (and laugh my butt off) all the time when I was a kid.

Here’s Lawrence O’Donnell on 3/01/11 taking Mike Huckabee to task for saying that President Obama grew up in Kenya.

Here’s Hardball’s 3/02/11 “The Lie That Won’t Die” panel discussion about Huckabee’s statement. Coincidentally, Chris also mentions “good hearts,” which takes us to our next clip, the trailer for the movie I Heart Huckabees. It’s set in Arizona when Huckabee was governor (“Huckabees” was the name of the Wal-Mart-like store featured in the movie).

Here’s more of Huckabee’s interview. And by the way: we do in fact know all about where Obama went to school, and Obama did not give the Churchill bust back to the British.

Update: Here’s Chris Matthews’ 3/04/11 “Let Me Finish” comment on Huckabee’s statement and the deeper politico-psycological reasons for it. Chris also cites George Will’s article referring to Huckabee’s “vibrations of weirdness.”
