Birther Circus

May 25th, 2012

Inspired by the recent resurgence of the Birthers’ three-ring circus (with circus barker Donald Trump performing his traditional role as huckster-in-chief), Newt Gingrich weakly distancing himself, and Mitt Romney’s walking the tightrope between channeling Birther support and avoiding too close a linkage to them.

“Now if I could just see Obama’s.” – Donald Trump today on the View after Joy jokingly handed him her birth certificate

“We’re not going to be able to solve our problems if we get distracted by sideshows and carnival barkers.” – President Obama at a press conference last April making a not-so-veiled reference to Donald Trump

“What if [Obama] is so outside our comprehension, that only if you understand Kenyan, anti-colonial behavior, can you begin to piece together [what he does]?” – Newt Gingrich interview in 2010 with The National Review

“Beats me.” – Newt Gingrich yesterday on Hardball, in response to Chris’s question about why some Republicans continue to push the Birther “issue”

In the Birther Circus, Trump is P.T. Barnum

(He still keeps getting people to listen, darn ‘em).

Newt Gingrich is more like the Cirque de Soleil:

He plays the same game, but in a more sophisticated way.

Newt seeks his base appeals in intellectualism to disguise,

And instead of saying things directly, he implies.

Yesterday, in more professional company,

He sought to separate himself from his company.

But no matter how adeptly Newt manages to work us,

Sophisticated or not, he’s still part of the circus.

And Donald, the barker, with his trademark panache

Gets the gullible to part with their cash.

Mitt is the ringmaster, and it’s supposed to be his role

To keep the various circus acts under control.

He wants to keep the rubes in his tent, but retain plausible deniability

(Otherwise, he might hurt his electability).

So Mitt allows the three-ring circus to go on,

Stepping out of the ring when it’s time for the clowns to go on.

He doesn’t stoop to their level, maintaining his own aura of sophistication.

Is that the kind of guy we want leading our Nation?
