Bending Over Backwards

September 13th, 2012

Sometimes, the arc of the moral universe bends backwards.

“It turns back the clock getting us out of a tradition of 50 or 60 years of expanding the vote to a time when we used to suppress the vote and restrict the vote. And for it all to come down to Pennsylvania, the very cradle of our Democracy, Philadelphia where the Declaration of Independence itself was signed, calls the question for the nation: are we gonna move forward? Are we gonna keep on in the tradition of expanding rights, or are we going to go backward to a dark day when we restricted rights and we made it harder for people to vote.” – NAACP President Ben Jealous on Now
“How long? Not long, because the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice.” – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous “how long” speech

Republicans are bending over backwards to make it harder for some people to vote

(Or should I say make it harder for “some people” to vote).

When you try to take someone’s right to vote away,

The arc of the universe is bending the wrong way.

And when the arc of the universe bends back,

It stabs Lady Liberty in the back.

You should care, even if you’re not one of the “some”

Because of what this means our democracy might become.

Here’s Now’s 9/13/12 panel discussion on the GOP’s voter suppression efforts. NAACP President Ben Jealous joins the panel from in front of the PA State Courthouse in Philadelphia, where judges are deciding on PA’s new voter ID law (his quote is at the 5”10 mark).
