A follow-up to Birth Rights and Wrongs, Soul Man, and Not Raped Enough, inspired by Push for ‘Personhood’ Amendments Is New Tack in Abortion Fight (NYTimes.com 10/25/11) and The ‘Personhood’ Initiative (NYTimes.com editorial 10/27/11). Leave a comment to let me know what you think, and SIGN THIS PETITION to protest the amendment.“Be it Enacted by the People of the State of Mississippi: Section 1. Article III of the constitution of the state of Mississippi is hearby amended by the addition of a new section to read: Section 33. Person defined. As used in this Article III of the state constitution, ‘The term person or persons shall include every human being from the moment of fertilization, cloning or the functional equivalent thereof.’” – Mississippi Initiative #26, to be voted on Nov. 6
Mississippi’s anti-abortion rights advocates haven’t figured out
What the personhood amendment is really about.
Forget that it reverses Roe v. Wade
And abortion without exception forbade.
Forget that it outlaws common forms of contraception
(Proponents don’t mention that little deception).
Forget that it makes illegal common forms of in vitro fertilization,
Thus eliminating some couples’ only chance for procreation.
The amendment would do something else far more destructive
Than take away unneeded freedoms reproductive.
If you pass a law saying the personhood begins when a person’s conceived,
Prepare for an onslaught the likes of which America has never received.
We all know about illegals that arrange for their kids to be born in theU.S.
(Yet another immigration problem Obama has failed to address).
The Personhood Amendment inadvertently an even worse situation creates,
Because then those babies wouldn’t even have to be born in the States.
All that a foreign couple would have to do
Would be to get to American soil for a minute or two.
Then, a quick in-and-out and some KY Jelly
And Mamacita would have an American citizen in her belly.
Think of all those European women with their unshaven legs
Who will come to America to fertilize their eggs.
They’ll start having sex in airport immigrant processing rooms,
Just to get American babies in their wombs.
Illegals could even have sex in their detention cells,
Which would be all it would take to create those American citizen cells.
Compare those few minutes of bliss to painful hours to give birth,
And you can see we’ll soon be attracting the dregs of the earth.
Even if border guards catch couples in the act,
It will be too late, that microscopic American citizen to extract.
And we wouldn’t even be able Mamacita to deport,
Since that wouldn’t with the zygote’s constitutional rights comport.
The only safe approach is to make sure the Fourteenth Amendment is repealed first,
Since once that fetus’s U.S. citizenship is received, it can’t be reversed.
So please, Personhood people, hear my fervent plea:
Withdrawal your amendment, temporarily.
And Mississippi voters, make sure you vote no
Unless you want to create an unending illegal immigrant flow.
Update 10/28/11: Here’s Rachel’s report on Mississippi’s personhood amendment. Note that while the amendment is farthest along there (and coming up for a vote Nov. 8), its organizers are pursuing ballot initiatives in all 50 states.
