Inspired by Certificate unlikely to appease birthers: Despite Obama’s release of document, theorists voice doubts, Fact Checker look at Trump’s ‘birther’ statements, With certificate, president tries to end ‘silliness’, Donald Trump: Birther and beyond–After claiming credit on the issue, he takes jabs at gas prices, OPEC, Born in the USA, No sideshows here (Washington Post 4/28/11), and With Drudge Report’s Help, Birthers Latch Onto Phony Forgery Theory (Talking Points Memo 4/29/11). Now that President Obama has released his long-form birth certificate (as the “just release it” Birthers have been demanding he do since day 1), will the Birther movement fundamentally change? Will we have to divide the movement’s history into two periods, pre- and post-long-form release? Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a convenient term for those who still wave the Birther banner in this latter period?
“Afterbirthers: Those who still suspect that President Obama is not an American system (aka ‘Birthers’), even after publication of the President’s long-form birth certificate.” – New Newsericks Dictionary
Birther movement history can be divided into before the long-form and after.
Now Birthers should be no more, but we still have the Afterbithers to clean up after.
“Just release the long-form certificate,” the Birthers said.
Now that Obama has, the Afterbirthers want other things instead.
Even in the pre-long-form era, Birtherism was extreme,
But the post-long-form era requires a new descriptive meme.
The term “Afterbirther” has a nice ring to it,
Suggesting the conspiratorial messiness its believers bring to it.
The Birthers focused on Obama’s alleged foreign birth–
Afterbirthers also seek other supposed dirty secrets to unearth.
Can they ever be convinced?
Probably not, as by their recent reaction evinced.
Then again, it’s always problematic
To try to reason with a fanatic.
Here are Chris Matthews’ 4/27/11 report and panel discussion, and 4/28/11 report and comment on the Birther movement. I love the “questions” that Fox News raises about the long-form certificate.
Here’s the President’s full speech.
Here’s Jon Stewart’s 4/28/11 report.
I did come up with the term “afterbirther” myself as the term for the post-long-form Birther movement on my own, but unfortunately I wasn’t the first one to coin the term: viz. Afterbirthers Demand To See Obama’s Placenta (The Onion 8/27/09). And BTW, here’s the President’s long-form birth certificate.
