The Coming Caliphate? (or: Don’t Listen to Glenn Beck)
February 2nd, 2011
Inspired by The revolution grows up: Finally, protests focus on human rights rather than hate (David Ignatius, Washington Post 2/02/11), In Egypt Protests, Beck Sees … A New Islamic Caliphate And Communist Revolution? (Media Matters 2/01/11), and Beck Breathlessly Predicts An Alliance Of Marxists And Islamic Radicals Will “Implode” The “Whole World” (Media Matters 2/01/11) and Chris Matthews’ discussion below.
“I believe that I can make a case in the end that there are three powers that you will see really emerge. One, a Muslim caliphate that controls the Mideast and parts of Europe. Two, China, that will control Asia, the southern half of Africa, part of the Middle East, Australia, maybe New Zealand, and God only knows what else. And Russia, which will control all of the old former Soviet Union bloc, plus maybe the Netherlands. I’m not really sure. But their strong arm is coming. That leaves us and South America. What happens to us?” – Glenn Beck illustrating (on a map of the Middle East on his chalkboard) how the protests in Egypt are part of a conspiracy to restore the Islamic Caliphate
“This is not about slogans. The real issue is life: I want an apartment, I want a job.” — Lebanese journalist Jamil Mroueh
Glenn Beck, the prophet of hate
Fears the coming Islamic Caliphate.
And according to his latest screeds,
The uber-Left is helping sow the seeds.
According to Professor Panic’s historic review,
Radical Islam is going to take over Europe too.
Glenn also says something that all reason refutes:
It turns out that Obama and George Bush were in cahoots
I get why he thinks that about Obama, since he’s Muslim too
But I can’t figure why he thinks that about W.
(Promoting Middle East democracy is one thing Bush got right;
I agreed with the goal, but just don’t think he did it right.)
It’s nice to have Arab protesters calling for democracy instead
Of calling for America and Israel to be dead.
But Glenn sees this as the coming of the Caliphate and End Times,
Aided by the Muslim/Liberal conspiracy (just one of their many crimes).
For what it’s worth, and I’ll try to be concise,
Here is my humble advice.
To the protesters in Egypt:
Americans are on the side of freedom and human rights,
Not the kind of paranoia and hatred that Glenn Beck incites.
Most Americans aren’t the way Glenn Beck presents us;
Please don’t think that he represents us.
To President Mubarak:
For 30 years, you did a lot for Middle East peace,
But now it’s time to go; please leave in peace.
And to Glenn Beck:
So far, this has been a democratic revolution;
Opposing them as radical Muslims isn’t the solution.
Shut up, or you and your kind might help bring about
The very thing you’re warning about.
