Inspired by George Will’s article mocking the historic passage of healthcare reform.

“Years from now, we’re all going to look back and say that this was one of the days when we were worth a damn.” – Rep. Bobby Scott (D-VA) in interview with Eugene Robinson about the passage of healthcare reform (Heath care’s glorious mess, Washington Post 3/23/10).

It’s not just the Dems who won, you see.

Dems missed the opportunity

To go down in history.

By taking healthcare action,

They failed to continue 100 years of inaction

George, though some of your points are hazy,

The theme seems to be that Dems are crazy.

On that note, and to continue an earlier post’s metaphor,

 “At least we tried” (and, we plan to do more).

History is written by the winners, it’s often said,

But that’s less true in America, where information is widespread,

Except, of course, in Texas schools,

Where election winners rewrite education rules.

And there’s another major history rewrite

Now being promoted by the Far Right.

Glenn Beck, Ann Coulter, and others

Would turn FDR into Stalin, if they had their druthers.

They claim the New Deal was a catastrophe

That forever ruined our once-great country.

On the contrary, the New Deal saved us

From a system that would have enslaved us.

But as your hero GB2 famously said,

By the time the history’s written, we’ll all be dead.

I don’t think that’s quite true,

Nor, I think, do you.

I’m not in favor of unfunded mandates

And the burden on the economy new spending creates.

But healthcare reform is part of the solution

To preventing our country’s dissolution.

Heathcare reform is far from unfunded, you see.

(For an example of that, see Medicare Part D).

The GOP created it, lest you forget,

A giant new entitlement, with $0 savings offset.

You see, making history isn’t the same

As making up history, which is a whole different ballgame.

No matter what you and your anti-healthcare reform allies say,

The President and our country did make history today.

Here’s the “at least I tried” scene referred to above from One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (sorry, no embedding for that one, but you can watch it on Youtube). And here’s the master of historical revisionism, Glenn Beck with his April 2009 “Destined to Repeat?” history special. Glenn disses almost everyone: TR, FDR, and Woodrow Wilson. When discussing Mussolini (who one of the commentators said was a “sex symbol”), Glenn talks about how when times are tough and people want a savior, it’s easy for the public to be convinced to support a good looking leader who communicates well and “not really listen to what they’re doing.” (that’s at the beginning of part 2). Now who could he be thinking about?

Glenn and George, here’s a movie you should see, Masters of Horror: The Washingtonians. Does it tell the real truth about President Washington, the truth that the Progressive Establishment doesn’t want us to know: that Washington was a murdering cannibal?
